Product Buildup: The Layer You Don't See
Styling products, dry shampoo, conditioner residue, silicone coatings, and mineral deposits from hard water all accumulate on the scalp surface over time. Unlike your face, where you can see and feel the buildup, your scalp is hidden under hair. The accumulation is invisible until it causes problems.

Over time, this film can block follicle openings and contribute to the thinning and shedding that dry shampoo users often don't connect to the product itself.
Silicone-based conditioners and styling products create a similar accumulation problem if they're applied to the scalp (rather than the mid-lengths and ends where they belong). Non-water-soluble silicones build up with each application and require a clarifying shampoo to remove, which itself can be harsh if used too frequently.

Gentle, pH-balanced cleansing. Your shampoo is a cleanser for your scalp. The same logic behind using a gentle facial cleanser applies: clean without stripping. Harsh surfactants strip the scalp's sebum and ceramides, disrupt the microbiome, and create the same cycle of depletion and overproduction that harsh facial cleansers create on the face.
Appropriate washing frequency. Not too much, not too little. Over-washing strips the scalp of protective oils faster than the glands can replace them, especially after 50 when sebum production has declined. Under-washing allows buildup, bacteria, and dead cells to accumulate. Two to three times per week works for most people. Adjust based on oil production, activity level, and how your scalp feels.
