The Eye Cream Myth: What Big Beauty Doesn’t Want You to Know
I get asked about eye cream more than almost any other product category.
Usually the question comes from a woman who's been using one for years, spending $50 to $80 on a tiny jar, and can't tell if it's actually doing anything. She's not sure if her under-eye area looks better because of the cream or if it would look exactly the same without it. But she's afraid to stop, because what if it IS doing something and she just can't see it?
That fear of stopping is the engine that keeps the eye cream category running. Not results. Fear.
Here's my honest answer, as someone who formulates skincare for a living: most people don't need a separate eye cream. The reasons the industry gives you for needing one don't hold up when you look at the biology. And understanding why will save you money, simplify your routine, and quite possibly get better results.
What's Actually Different About the Skin Around Your Eyes
Let's start with the part that IS true, because the best myths are built on a foundation of fact.
The skin around your eyes is different from the rest of your face. That's real. But the differences are narrower than the industry needs you to believe.
It's thinner. The periorbital skin (around the eye socket) is roughly 0.5mm thick, compared to about 2mm on the rest of your face. Thinner skin means less structural support, which is why fine lines and crepey texture tend to appear here first.
It has fewer oil glands. The under-eye area has minimal sebaceous gland activity. Less natural oil means less built-in moisture retention, which means this area dries out faster.
It moves constantly. You blink roughly 15,000 to 20,000 times a day. Every blink is a micro-contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle. That's mechanical stress that no other part of your face experiences at that frequency.
It shows vascular changes more easily. Thinner skin means blood vessels and fluid retention are more visible. That's why dark circles (often vascular) and puffiness (often fluid) are concentrated here.
Those are real anatomical differences. They explain why this area shows signs of aging first and why it can be more reactive.
Here's what they don't explain: why any of this means you need a completely separate product.
The Biology Is the Same (And That's What Matters)
The skin around your eyes is thinner. But it's made of the same stuff.
Same stratum corneum. Same barrier architecture. Same ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids holding the barrier together. Same hyaluronic acid providing hydration. Same collagen providing structure. Same cell turnover cycle shedding dead cells and replacing them with new ones.
The ingredients that support barrier function on your cheeks support barrier function under your eyes. The humectants that pull water into the skin on your forehead pull water into the skin under your eyes. Ceramides don't stop working because they crossed an invisible line from your cheek to your under-eye.
The under-eye area isn't a different organ. It's the same organ at a different thickness.
Think of it like this: a cotton t-shirt and a cotton dress shirt are made of different weights of fabric. One is thinner. One is thicker. But they're both cotton. You wash them the same way. You don't need a separate detergent for the t-shirt because the fibers are the same. The thickness changed. The material didn't.
What the thinner skin around your eyes actually needs is simple: the same barrier support and hydration as the rest of your face, applied gently (because it's thinner and more delicate), without irritating ingredients (because it's more reactive).
That's not a product category. That's an application technique.
What Eye Creams Actually Are (Once You Look Past the Marketing)
Here's what a dermatologist would tell you if you asked them off the record, and several have said this publicly.
Eye creams are moisturizers. Reformulated to be gentler, fragrance-free, and packaged in smaller jars at higher price points. The active ingredients are often the same ones found in the brand's regular moisturizer, frequently at lower concentrations because the thinner skin absorbs more readily and tolerates less.
A board-certified dermatologist quoted in HuffPost put it plainly: eye creams are "specially formulated moisturizers meant to be used on a specific area of skin." The ingredients overlap extensively. The primary differences are texture (usually lighter), fragrance (usually absent), and price per ounce (usually higher).
This doesn't mean eye creams are fraudulent. It means the distinction between "eye cream" and "well-formulated, gentle moisturizer" is much smaller than the industry wants you to think.
If your moisturizer is fragrance-free, gentle, well-formulated with barrier-supporting ingredients, and free of harsh actives that could irritate the periorbital area, you already own an eye cream. You just didn't know it because nobody put it in a tiny jar and charged you extra.
When a Separate Eye Product Might Make Sense (The Honest Concession)
I just told you that most people don't need a separate eye cream. That's true. But "most" isn't "all," and honesty means acknowledging the exceptions.
If your face moisturizer contains ingredients that irritate the eye area: Some moisturizers include retinol, L-ascorbic acid, AHAs, or essential oils that are fine on the cheeks and forehead but too aggressive for the thinner, more reactive periorbital skin. If that's your moisturizer, you have two options: switch to a gentler moisturizer you can use everywhere, or keep the aggressive one on your face and use something gentler around your eyes.
If your face moisturizer contains fragrance: Fragrance is the most common cause of periorbital contact dermatitis. The eye area is more reactive to sensitizing ingredients. If your moisturizer has fragrance and your eyes are irritated, a fragrance-free alternative for that area makes sense.
If your face moisturizer is heavily occlusive: Very thick, wax-based, or petroleum-heavy moisturizers can contribute to milia around the eyes, where the skin is thinnest and cell turnover is slowest. If you're prone to those tiny white bumps under your eyes, a lighter, humectant-forward formula for that area is worth considering.
If you're targeting a specific eye-area concern: Caffeine for puffiness (temporary, but real). Vitamin K for dark circles (modest evidence). A gentle retinoid for fine lines (when the barrier can support it). If you want a targeted active in the eye area that you don't need on the rest of your face, a separate product is the logical delivery vehicle.
Notice what all four of these have in common: the reason for a separate eye product is always about what your FACE product contains that's wrong for the eye area. The solution isn't adding a product. It's either fixing the face product or accommodating its limitations.
If your face moisturizer is already gentle, fragrance-free, barrier-supporting, and free of harsh actives, there's nothing in a separate eye cream that your moisturizer isn't already doing.
The "Instant Results" Trap
This is the part of the eye cream market that crosses from redundant into actively misleading.
A significant subcategory of eye creams promises immediate visible improvement: "instant lifting," "immediate tightening," "visible results in minutes." These products work. Just not the way you think.
They use film-forming agents (polymers that tighten the skin surface as they dry), light-reflecting particles (that scatter light to blur fine lines optically), or caffeine (that temporarily constricts blood vessels and dehydrates tissue to create a taut appearance).
The effect is cosmetic. It lasts until you wash your face. Nothing about your skin changed. The fine lines are still there. The barrier is still compromised. The hydration is still depleted. You just can't see it for a few hours because of a film or a light trick.
This is the same cosmetic vs. biological distinction we've written about before. Cosmetic improvement makes your skin look different temporarily. Biological improvement makes your skin function differently permanently. One washes off. The other compounds.
If you've been using an "instant results" eye cream for years and your under-eye area hasn't actually improved, it's because the product was never designed to improve anything. It was designed to create a temporary illusion you'd need to repurchase.
What Actually Helps Your Under-Eye Area (Long-Term)
The under-eye area responds to the same principles as the rest of your face. The application just needs to be gentler.
Barrier support. Ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids, and humectants in the correct ratio rebuild and maintain the barrier, reducing moisture loss and protecting against irritant penetration. This works on your under-eye skin the same way it works on your cheeks. The barrier is the same structure. It needs the same materials.
Hydration. Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and polyglutamic acid pull water into the skin and protect it from enzymatic degradation. Well-hydrated under-eye skin looks plumper, smoother, and less crepey. Not because of a trick. Because the moisture cushion underneath is genuinely fuller.
Gentle cleansing. A pH-balanced cleanser that doesn't strip the barrier is even more important around the eyes, where the barrier is thinnest and least able to recover from aggressive cleansing.
SPF. The periorbital area gets significant UV exposure and has less natural protection (thinner skin, fewer melanocytes). Sunscreen protects the collagen and elastin that provide what little structural support the under-eye area has.
Gentle application. Use your ring finger (least pressure) and pat rather than rub. The skin here doesn't need different ingredients. It needs a lighter touch.
What to avoid around the eyes: Fragrance, essential oils, high-concentration retinol (unless your barrier is strong and you've built tolerance), physical scrubs, and heavily occlusive formulas that can trap keratin and cause milia.

The skin around your eyes is thinner, drier, and more delicate than the rest of your face. Those differences are real. What those differences require is a gentle, fragrance-free, barrier-supporting moisturizer applied with a light touch.
If that description matches the moisturizer you already use on your whole face, you don't need an eye cream. You need to keep doing what you're doing and apply it under your eyes with your ring finger.
If your current moisturizer is too harsh, too fragranced, or too heavy for the eye area, the answer isn't adding a second product. It's reconsidering the first one.
