Collagen has become the supplement of the decade. It is in coffee creamer, in gummies, in fancy powders with rose gold labels, in drinks at the checkout counter. And the promise is always the same: take this, and you will rebuild the firmness, the bounce, the plumpness that time has been quietly taking away.

I want to have an honest conversation about that. Not to talk you out of anything you love, but to answer a question I get all the time: do collagen supplements work, and if I am going to spend money on one supplement for how I age, is collagen really the one?

Here is my short answer, and then I will show you all my work. Collagen is not useless. But for most women over 50, it is probably not the supplement that would change the most. There is another one, unglamorous and dirt cheap, with far stronger evidence behind it. Let me walk you through both.

Do Collagen Supplements Work, or Is It Just Expensive Protein?

Let us start with the fair version of the science, because I do not want to strawman collagen.

When you swallow a collagen supplement, your body does not ship those collagen molecules straight to your face like a delivery van. Digestion breaks them down into amino acids and small peptides, the same way it breaks down the protein in eggs or chicken. Those pieces enter a general pool, and your body decides where they go. You do not get to address the package.

That is the reductive case against collagen, and it is mostly true. But it is not the whole truth. Some of those small peptides, particularly ones containing hydroxyproline, appear to survive digestion and may act as signals, nudging the fibroblasts in your skin to make a little more collagen of their own. So it is not simply "expensive protein." There is a plausible mechanism.

And the studies are not nothing. Several trials have shown modest improvements in skin hydration and elasticity in women taking hydrolyzed collagen for eight to twelve weeks. The effects are real, but read the fine print: they are small, they take months, they fade when you stop, and many of the studies were funded by the companies selling the powder. Do collagen supplements work? In a modest, conditional way, for some people, yes. Just not the way the rose gold label implies.

The Conditions Nobody Mentions

Here is the part that gets left out of every collagen ad.

For collagen to help your skin at all, a stack of other conditions have to already be met. You need enough total protein in your diet, or your body has more urgent uses for those amino acids than your skin. You need vitamin C, because your body physically cannot build collagen without it. You need reasonably stable blood sugar, because chronically high blood sugar stiffens and damages the collagen you already have through a process called glycation. And you need your overall inflammation in check, because inflammation breaks collagen down faster than any supplement can top it up.

Is Creatine Safe? Clearing Up the Old Myth

The most common worry I hear is that creatine is hard on your kidneys. This is one of the stubbornest myths in nutrition, and it comes from a simple mix-up.

Creatine raises a blood marker called creatinine, which is also the marker doctors use to estimate kidney function. So a routine blood test can look alarming when it is really just reflecting the supplement, not any damage. In people with healthy kidneys, studies going back decades have found no evidence that normal creatine doses harm the kidneys.

In skincare, silicones do a few things really well:

  • They form a protective barrier without feeling greasy
  • They're water-resistant
  • They're chemically inert (meaning they don't react with other ingredients or your skin)

The most common ones you'll see on ingredient lists:

Dimethicone - The workhorse. Found in primers, moisturizers, foundations, sunscreens. If a product feels silky-smooth, it probably has dimethicone.

Cyclopentasiloxane - The evaporating one. Used in lightweight serums and primers. It gives you that silky feel during application, then disappears.

Cyclomethicone - Similar to cyclopentasiloxane. Volatile, evaporates quickly.

Back in the '80s and '90s, researchers observed that silicones form a "film" on the skin. Some people heard "film" and thought "impenetrable barrier that traps everything underneath."

Wrong.

Let's clear this up once and for all.

Your skin doesn't breathe through pores.

Pores are follicular openings for hair and sebum. They're not respiratory passages. Oxygen reaches your skin cells through your bloodstream - from your lungs, to your blood, to dermal capillaries, to your skin.

Even if you completely sealed your skin surface (which silicones don't do), it wouldn't prevent oxygenation.

Are Silicones Occlusive?

Partially. In a good way.

Silicones reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) by about 30-50%. That's enough to keep your skin hydrated without creating a plastic wrap effect.

For comparison, petrolatum (Vaseline) reduces TEWL by 98%. That's occlusive. Silicones are semi-occlusive at best.

They prevent dehydration while still allowing your skin to regulate itself. It's the sweet spot.

Do Silicones Trap Bacteria or Dirt?

No.

Common Questions (Because You're Probably Still Skeptical)

Can I use silicone products if I have cystic acne?

Yes. Silicones are non-comedogenic and won't contribute to cystic acne.

But here's the thing - cystic acne is hormonal and inflammatory. It requires medical treatment (prescription retinoids, spironolactone, or isotretinoin). Silicones won't cause it, but they also won't cure it.

I broke out after using a silicone primer. Doesn't that prove silicones cause acne?

Not necessarily.

Primers contain many ingredients beyond silicones. Check the full ingredient list for high-comedogenic ingredients like isopropyl myristate, coconut oil, or certain waxes.

Also consider:

  • Were you removing the primer thoroughly every night?
  • Were you already due for a hormonal breakout?
  • Were other factors changing (stress, diet, new makeup)?

Correlation doesn't equal causation. Just because you broke out while using a silicone product doesn't mean silicones caused it.

Are "silicone alternatives" better for acne-prone skin?

Depends on what the alternative is.

Some alternatives (like squalane, rating 0-1) are equally non-comedogenic. Others (like coconut oil, rating 4) are way more likely to clog pores.

Always check the comedogenic rating of the alternative, not just whether it's marketed as "natural" or "clean."

Should I avoid silicones if I'm on tretinoin?

No. In fact, silicones can help.

Tretinoin causes dryness and irritation. A silicone-containing moisturizer provides hydration and barrier protection without interfering with the retinoid's efficacy.

Many dermatologists specifically recommend silicone-based moisturizers for retinoid users because they're non-comedogenic and won't make purging worse.

Do silicones cause fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis)?

No.

Fungal acne is caused by malassezia yeast, which feeds on oils and fatty acids. Silicones aren't lipids - the yeast can't metabolize them.

Silicones are considered safe for fungal acne-prone skin. Some dermatologists recommend them specifically because they provide moisture without feeding the yeast.


The Bottom Line

After decades of research, clinical trials, and real-world use, the evidence is clear:

Silicones are non-comedogenic. They don't cause acne. They're safe for all skin types, including acne-prone and sensitive skin. Dermatologists recommend them. They're in prescription acne treatments.

Why Skincare Ingredient Lists Are Misleading (And What to Read Instead)

I get asked some version of this almost every day. "What do you think about [insert buzzy ingredient]?" Or, "Why isn't XYZ in this formula? Should I be adding it separately?"

And every time, I stall. Not because I don't know the answer, but because the question itself is missing something. For a long time I couldn't put my finger on what. Then I remembered my mother.

When I was a kid, I would wander into the kitchen and ask, "What's for dinner?" And nine times out of ten I got the same answer: "Food." If she was feeling generous, "Pasta." But that told me almost nothing. Was it the good kind, with her sauce that had been going since noon? Or the sad kind, with frozen vegetables and whatever meat was closest to expiring?

That is exactly how people ask about skincare. "What's in this cream?" And the expected answer is "hyaluronic acid," or "peptides," or "retinol," whatever is trending. But that answer is about as useful as "pasta." Which is the whole reason skincare ingredient lists are misleading: they tell you the cast, not the movie. Let me show you the difference, because once you see it you cannot unsee it.

Ingredients Aren't the Answer. Formulas Are.

Here is the truth no brand has much reason to tell you. Skincare is not about ingredients. It is about formulas.

Ingredients do not work in a vacuum. They need the right company: support ingredients, a delivery system, stabilizers, buffers, the right pH, the right ratios, things that are compatible with each other. An active dropped into the wrong formula can do nothing, or worse than nothing.

Think of it like casting a film. Is Brad Pitt a good actor? Sure. But is this Fight Club Brad Pitt, or the one from a movie you have already forgotten? Same actor, wildly different result. Most skincare is marketed as if the ingredient were the star and simply casting it guaranteed a great film. But a formula is not a cast list. It is the script, the director, the timing, the whole production. The name on the poster tells you who showed up. It does not tell you whether the movie is any good.

What Actually Goes Into a Formula

Once you see how a formula is really built, the label starts to look very different. There are roughly four layers, and only one of them is the part you were reading.

There are the actives, the headliners you recognize: retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides. But most actives need specific conditions to do anything. Vitamin C is the classic example. Pure L-ascorbic acid oxidizes quickly and needs a low pH, plus partners like vitamin E and ferulic acid, just to stay stable and absorb. A brand can put "vitamin C" on the front of the bottle and still hand you something that browned into uselessness before you opened it.

There are the carriers and the base, the soup the actives sit in: water, oils, emulsifiers, thickeners. The base largely decides whether an active absorbs or just sits on top, whether it releases slowly or flashes and fades. Two creams with the identical percentage of hyaluronic acid can behave completely differently depending on the molecular weight of that HA and what it is suspended in.

There are the stabilizers and preservatives, the unglamorous crew that keeps the product from oxidizing, separating, or turning into a petri dish. And there are the sensory agents, texture and feel, which matter more than they sound, because a product that stings or pills is a product you will abandon, no matter how good the actives are.

Why the Ingredient List Is Misleading

Now we get to the heart of it. Brands list ingredients. They almost never tell you the things that decide whether those ingredients work.

They do not tell you the percentage of each active. Or whether that is the dose the research actually used. Or whether it is in a form your skin can use. Or whether the formula holds it stable long enough to matter. So "with peptides!" on the label leaves every real question unanswered: which peptides, at what concentration, and are they there to work, or just to appear on the label?

And there is a labeling quirk that brands lean on. By regulation, ingredients present at 1% or more must be listed in descending order of how much is in the product. But everything below 1% can be listed in any order the brand likes. So a trendy active that makes up a fraction of a percent can be shuffled up the list to sit near the ingredients that are actually doing the heavy lifting, looking far more important than it is. It is legal. It is also exactly why the list you are squinting at can mislead you.

It helps to know one more thing about how the whole system runs. Neither the FDA nor Health Canada approves cosmetics before they hit the shelf. They rely on the manufacturer to formulate responsibly. Which means a beautifully packaged, poorly built product can absolutely make it to market with all the right words on the box.

Same Ingredient, Wildly Different Story

Let me make this concrete, because it is the part that changes how you shop.

Imagine two moisturizers, both proudly listing niacinamide. In the first, the niacinamide sits alongside ceramides, glycerin, and panthenol, in a gentle base buffered to a skin-friendly pH. In the second, it sits with drying alcohols and volatile oils, in a base with nothing to support it and nothing to soothe.

Same ingredient. Same word on the label. One of those products calms and strengthens skin. The other can leave it stripped and reactive. Nothing about the ingredient list would tell you which is which.

That is the principle underneath all of this, and it holds across the board. In principle, a lower dose of an active in a well-built base can easily outperform a higher dose in a harsh one, because the base is doing half the work. The number on the label is not the story. The company that number keeps is the story. Presence is not performance.

What to Ask Instead of "What's In It?"

So here is the upgrade. Stop reading ingredient lists like résumés, a pile of impressive names, and start asking better questions.

Instead of "does this have XYZ," ask: is this ingredient stabilized, supported, and delivered in a way that actually works? Does this formula do one thing really well, or ten things poorly? Are these actives here because they belong, or because they compete well on a label?

And do not let anyone make you feel you need a chemistry degree to buy skincare. You do not. Formulation is genuinely complicated, and, honestly, a lot of the industry likes it that way, because the harder a formula is to decode, the easier it is to dazzle you with claims and keep you ingredient-hopping, trend-chasing, and second-guessing your way to a fuller cabinet. Confusion keeps you spending.

You do not have to memorize compounds. You just have to hold onto one idea: an ingredient's presence does not prove its performance. Judge the product the only way that is honest, by what your skin actually does over two weeks, four, eight. Does it feel stronger, calmer, more balanced? Or more confused? Your skin keeps score, and it does not care about percentages. It cares about outcomes.

Back to Dinner

Which brings me home, to my mother's kitchen.

The reason "food" was a useless answer is the same reason "hyaluronic acid" is. It names a category, not an experience. What you actually wanted to know was whether dinner was going to be good.

And when you finally sit down to a dish that works, you do not interrogate it. You do not ask whether it is penne or rigatoni, or demand the exact ratio of garlic to oil. You just know it is good. You know you are home. That is the feeling I want you to chase with your skin, too. Not a cast list of trendy ingredients, but a formula that quietly does its job, so that "what's in it" matters far less than what it does, and how your skin feels when it does it.

Percentage is one clue, not the answer.

Do I need to understand cosmetic chemistry to buy skincare well? No. You can judge a product by outcomes rather than by decoding its formula. Give it a few weeks and notice whether your skin feels calmer, stronger, and more comfortable, or more irritated and confused. Your skin's response over time is more reliable than any ingredient on the label.

Should I add trending ingredients to my routine separately? Usually not. An active pulled out of a considered formula and layered onto everything else is more likely to clash or overwhelm your barrier than to help. A well-built product already handles the context; piling on single ingredients tends to create the confusion this whole piece is warning you about.

Do You Need a Toner? The Honest Answer, One Kind at a Time

"Should I use a toner?" We get asked this constantly. And if you have ever stood in the skincare aisle holding a bottle, trying to work out whether it is the missing link in your routine, you are in good company.

Here is the problem. There is no straight answer, because "toner" does not mean one thing anymore. There are toners for oil control, for pH, for exfoliating, for hydration, for soothing. Toners with alcohol, with acids, with calming herbs, with actual rose petals floating in them like a potion. The word has been stretched to cover almost anything in a bottle.

So let me actually answer the question the useful way. Here is what a toner is, what it isn't, why it was invented, and whether, if the rest of your skincare is doing its job, you need one at all. The short version of "do you need a toner" is usually no, but the interesting part is why.

Why Toner Exists in the First Place

To understand toner, you have to go back to when cleansers were brutal.

Old facial cleansers were built on harsh, soap-like surfactants at a high, alkaline pH. They left your skin squeaky clean and stripped to the bone, tight, dry, and out of balance. Toner was invented to clean up that mess. A second step whose whole job was to undo the damage of the first: restore the skin's natural acidity, calm the irritation, and pretend the stripping never happened.

In other words, toner started life as a compensation. A second pill to treat the side effects of the first. And that is the frame to keep in mind for everything that follows, because cleansers have improved enormously since then, but toner never left. It just multiplied, into a dozen forms with a dozen new justifications.

"Toner" Isn't One Thing Anymore

Here is the honest definition. "Toner" is a marketing category, not a function. It has become the catch-all shelf for anything that does not fit neatly into cleanser, serum, or moisturizer. Which means the only way to answer "do you need a toner" is to stop treating it as one product and look at what is actually in the bottle.

So let me walk you through the kinds, and give you a straight yes or no on each.

The Eight Kinds of Toner, and Whether You Need Any of Them

Astringent toners (alcohol, witch hazel) promise to strip oil and tighten pores. You get a short-lived matte finish and, over time, a worn-down barrier. Do you need it? No. This is 1990s skincare logic, control, strip, suppress, and it is rough even on oily skin, punishing on dry or mature skin.

pH-balancing toners exist to return your skin to its natural acidity after an alkaline cleanser, usually with a little lactic or citric acid. Do you need it? Only if your cleanser is alkaline (above pH 7). Ours is not. Our Face Wash sits at pH 4.5, right in skin's own acidic range, so there is nothing to re-balance. A pH toner after a well-made cleanser is fixing a problem you do not have.

Hydrating toners and essences are sold as a drink of water for your skin, with glycerin, hyaluronic acid, aloe, rose water. Do you need it? Only if your moisturizer or serum is not holding hydration in. If your barrier is healthy and your moisturizer works, an extra watery layer is more ritual than result.

Exfoliating toners (glycolic, lactic, mandelic, salicylic) are acids in liquid form. Do you need it? Maybe, occasionally, and only with intention. But let us be honest about what it is: this is not a "toner," it is a chemical exfoliant, and acids deserve respect. If you use one, the gentler large-molecule acids like lactic and mandelic are kinder to mature skin than glycolic, and once or twice a week is plenty.

Soothing and treatment toners carry calming actives, green tea, niacinamide, chamomile, centella. Do you need it? Only if those actives are missing from the rest of your routine. If they are already in your serum or moisturizer, you are just paying twice for the same thing.

Cleansing toners and micellar waters are water-based cleansers with surfactants that lift makeup and dirt. Do you need it? They are handy for a quick cleanse, but they are not really toner, they are a no-rinse cleanser, and dermatologists generally suggest rinsing after so the surfactant does not sit on your skin. Useful as cleanup, not as a treatment step.

Facial mists are mostly water, a little fragrance, a few herbs, meant to refresh you during the day. Do you need it? If you enjoy misting your face, by all means. Just do not mistake it for hydration or treatment. It feels lovely and does very little.

Actives-as-toners blur into serum territory, packed with peptides, vitamin C, or retinoids and simply given a thinner texture. Do you need it? Not if you already use targeted treatments. A watery texture does not make it a different step, it is a serum with lighter marketing.

What Nobody Tells You: Most Toners Are Compensations

Look back over that list and a pattern jumps out. Toners are sold as essentials. But most of them are compensations. They exist to fix what a poorly built routine broke.

A pH-balancing toner is a workaround for a cleanser that never should have been alkaline. A hydrating toner is a patch for a moisturizer that does not hold water. An exfoliating toner is a daily peel wearing a refresher's costume. It is, again, taking a second pill to manage the side effects of the first. And the honest question is the obvious one: why not fix the first pill?

If your skincare is well formulated from the start, you do not need a recovery step after every move. The best product does not create a problem the next product has to solve.

So Do You Need a Toner?

Here is the straight answer. Not as a standard step, no.

Some people genuinely enjoy toners, some routines benefit from a specific one, and there are excellent formulas out there. If you love a particular toner and your skin is happy, keep it. But the belief that every routine must include a toner is legacy thinking, a leftover from when skincare was reactive, built to undo damage, instead of preventative, built not to cause it in the first place.

When each step of your routine supports your barrier and sets up the next one, the "extra" steps quietly disappear. You do not need more steps. You need better ones.

Will We Ever Make a Toner?

Let me put it this way. Do you really want us to hand you five new maybes for your morning? One for balance, one for hydration, one for acid, one for actives, and one, let us be honest, purely for vibes?

Or would you rather we just make the rest of your skincare so good that the question never comes up?

We did not forget toner. We built the rest of the routine to make it unnecessary. That is not a gap in the lineup. It is the whole point.

Modern, well-formulated cleansers are already pH-balanced to skin's acidic range (ours sits at 4.5), which leaves nothing for a pH toner to correct. In that case it is solving a problem your cleanser no longer creates.

Are hydrating toners worth it? Only if your moisturizer or serum is not holding hydration in. A hydrating toner adds a light, temporary layer of humectants, but if your barrier is healthy and your moisturizer is doing its job, that extra watery step is more ritual than meaningful hydration. Fix the moisturizer before adding a toner to compensate for it.

Is an exfoliating toner different from an acid? No. An exfoliating toner is an acid (glycolic, lactic, mandelic, or salicylic) in a thin, liquid format. Treat it like the chemical exfoliant it is: use it sparingly, at night, follow with moisturizer and daily SPF, and lean toward gentler acids like lactic if your skin is mature or sensitive.

Is micellar water a toner? Not really. Micellar water is a no-rinse cleanser that uses surfactants to lift dirt and makeup, so it belongs to the cleansing step, not a treatment step. It is convenient, but dermatologists generally recommend rinsing afterward so the surfactant does not linger on your skin. Handy for cleanup, not a substitute for good skincare.

Let us talk about exfoliating. Not just whether you should, but how to even think about it, because the advice is a mess.

Ask around and you will hear all of it. Use it daily. Only at night. Only in winter. Twice a week, max. Never. And if you are over 50, the advice somehow gets blurrier, not clearer.

So let me simplify. This is not a how-to. It is a should-you. And the honest answer to "should you exfoliate over 50" starts with a fact almost nobody mentions: your skin already exfoliates itself, for free, every single day. Once you understand that, the whole question changes. Let me show you when a little help makes sense, when it backfires, and how to tell the difference.

Your Skin Already Exfoliates Itself (For Free)

Exfoliation is just the removal of dead surface cells so fresher ones can take their place. And your skin has been doing that on its own your entire life, without a single product.

The process has a name: desquamation. Enzymes quietly loosen the connections holding your dead surface cells together, and those cells shed off, a few at a time, continuously, as a normal part of a healthy barrier. You do not feel it. You do not manage it. It simply runs.

What changes with age, and stress, and dryness, is the pace. That quiet shedding slows down, which is why skin can start to look duller or rougher over time. So there is a real thing happening. The question is what to do about it, and here is where the industry and your biology part ways.

The Acids the Industry Sells You (And What They Really Do)

The industry does not like to wait for a slow natural process, so it built ways to force it.

First came scrubs: crushed shells, seeds, plastic beads. Sandpaper for your face. On thin, aging skin especially, please do not. Dragging grit across thin skin is the fast road to irritation and a roughed-up barrier.

Then came acids, which are more refined and genuinely more clever. Glycolic, lactic, salicylic, mandelic. They work by dissolving the "glue" between your surface cells so the outer layer sheds faster. They do work.

But an acid is still an acid. It does its job by chemically disrupting your skin's structure, and it does not discriminate between the dead cells you wanted gone and the living barrier you needed to keep. On robust skin, that is a manageable trade. After 50, it is a much bigger ask.

Why Exfoliating Over 50 Asks More From Skin That Has Less

Here is the part that changes the math.

After menopause, your skin is thinner, drier, and slower to heal. It makes less oil, holds less water, and takes longer to recover from any stress you put on it. So every time you exfoliate, you are asking more from skin that has less to give.

Think of it like refinishing an antique. On a sturdy new tabletop, a bit of sanding brings up a fresh surface. On a delicate old piece, that same sanding does not reveal the shine, it strips the finish, and the finish is not coming back. Thin, mature skin is the antique. The very thing you reached for to "brighten" or "renew" can be the thing quietly wearing it down.

Which raises a question worth sitting with. What if the dullness was never about buildup in the first place?

It's Not Always Buildup, Sometimes It's Dryness

The things that send people reaching for an exfoliant, dullness, uneven texture, a rough or congested feel, are not always dead skin sitting on the surface. Very often they are signals of what is happening underneath: dryness, low-grade inflammation, a weakened barrier, dehydrated cells that cannot function well.

And if that is the real cause, scrubbing acid over the top does not fix it. It is like pruning a plant that has not rooted. You are not helping it grow. You are just adding stress to something that needed feeding, not cutting.

That mistaken diagnosis, treating a moisture problem as a buildup problem, is behind a huge share of the irritated, over-worked skin I see. The fix is not a stronger exfoliant. It is often the opposite.

Support Your Skin's Turnover, Don't Force It

So here is the approach we build around, and it is quiet on purpose.

Instead of forcing turnover with acids, create the conditions where your skin does it well on its own: steady hydration, a repaired barrier, and the lipids skin is made of, restored. When skin is healthy and comfortable, its natural desquamation works the way it is supposed to, at the pace it can handle, without a harsh reminder. This is close to what dermatologists mean by "supportive" skincare: restoring the function of aging skin rather than trauma-based turnover.

That is why our two-step system leans on barrier support and a gentle cleanser rather than a lineup of acids. If you have read our other pieces on going easy on your barrier, this will sound familiar, because it is the same principle: healthy skin does not need to be forced. It needs to be fed.

So Is There Ever a Time to Exfoliate Over 50?

Yes. I am not going to pretend acids are useless, because they are not. The rule is intention, not habit.

If your skin genuinely feels rough, congested, bumpy, or resistant to normal cleansing, a well-formulated, gentle chemical exfoliant can help. Use it as a tool, not a ritual. Try it once. Wait a few days. Look for clearer, smoother skin without tightness, stinging, or flaking. If your skin looks better, wonderful, that is enough. Stop, and go back to full support mode. You do not have to keep going just because the bottle is there.

A few honest guardrails. Never exfoliate in the morning, because acids, especially AHAs like glycolic acid, increase your sun sensitivity, so night use plus daily SPF is the safe pattern. And if you do choose an acid, know they are not equal. Glycolic acid is the smallest and most penetrating AHA, and the most likely to sting. Lactic acid, despite being an AHA too, is a larger molecule that works more slowly and gently, and it is actually hydrating, because it is one of skin's own natural moisturizing factors, which makes it a genuinely kind choice for dry or mature skin. Salicylic acid, a BHA, works down inside oily pores. And PHAs like gluconolactone are gentler still. If you are going to exfoliate over 50, lactic acid or a PHA is where to start, not glycolic.

And watch for the trap. The most common thing I hear is "I used acids to make my skin better, and it looked worse." That is not rare, it is predictable. Persistent redness, new dryness, stinging on application, a rough texture that never improves, a shiny, too-smooth feel with no bounce, that is not renewed skin. That is depleted skin. It is why dermatologists tell you to match frequency to your skin and method, the gentler and less often, the better, and less still if your skin runs dry or sensitive. For a lot of women over 50, the honest answer is closer to "rarely."

Should You Exfoliate Over 50? The Honest Answer

It depends, and here is the simple way to decide.

If your skin is dull, flaky, and sluggish, you probably do not need to exfoliate. You need moisture and barrier support. Feed it, and the dullness usually lifts on its own as your natural shedding gets back up to speed.

If your skin is genuinely congested, bumpy, or unusually textured, you might benefit from a gentle acid, used once and evaluated, then set back down.

But the real rule is the quietest one. If your skin is not ready for it, do not force it. Give it the hydration and lipids it is asking for, let it find its footing, and trust the process that has been running your whole life. Your skin already knows how to do this. Most of the time, the kindest thing you can do is get out of its way.

Many women over 50 do best exfoliating rarely, if at all, and relying on barrier support to keep skin smooth and clear.

What's the gentlest exfoliant for older skin? A mild chemical exfoliant beats any scrub. Among acids, lactic acid and PHAs like gluconolactone are the gentlest and most hydrating, far kinder to sensitive or mature skin than glycolic acid. Lactic acid in particular is both an exfoliant and a natural moisturizing factor, so it hydrates while it works. Whatever you choose, use it sparingly, at night, follow with moisturizer, and wear sunscreen daily, since acids increase sun sensitivity.

What are the signs of over-exfoliation? Persistent redness, new or worsening dryness, stinging when you apply products, a rough texture that never seems to improve, and a shiny, too-smooth feel with no bounce. That combination is not renewed skin; it is depleted skin. If you see it, stop all exfoliation and focus on gentle hydration and barrier repair for several weeks.

Do I even need to exfoliate at all? For most people, no. Healthy skin sheds dead cells on its own through a natural process, and supporting that with hydration and a strong barrier keeps skin smooth without any active exfoliation. Exfoliating is an occasional tool for specific texture concerns, not a required step, and skipping it entirely is a perfectly good routine.

So let me clear the air, because the fear has this exactly backwards. Preservatives in skincare are not the danger. In a water-based product, the thing quietly putting your skin at risk is usually the absence of one. Here is what preservatives really do, why "preservative-free" is a warning label and not a badge of honor, and how to tell the real concerns from the marketing.

What Preservatives in Skincare Actually Do

A preservative's job is simple and unglamorous: stop bacteria, yeast, and mold from growing in your product. (Keeping the oils from going rancid is a related but separate job, handled by antioxidants like vitamin E, same idea of stopping spoilage, different tool.)

This is not a theoretical worry. It is microbiology. The moment water is in a formula, that formula becomes food. Bacteria, yeast, and mold are all perfectly happy to move into your moisturizer, and a warm, steamy bathroom is close to ideal conditions for them.

Here is the analogy that makes it click. You do not buy "refrigerator-free" milk. You keep milk cold because you understand, without needing a lecture, that a nutrient-rich liquid left warm on the counter turns into a science experiment. A water-based cream with no preservative is that carton of milk on the counter. It looks fine on day one. Give it a week of finger-dips and shower steam, and you are running a small farm on your bathroom shelf.

Preservatives are the refrigeration. They are not the thing that spoils your product. They are the thing that stops it from spoiling you.

Why "Preservative-Free" Is a Warning, Not a Badge

Clean-beauty brands love to announce "no preservatives," as if that were an achievement. In most cases, what it actually means is "this is one steamy shower away from contamination."

Under-preserved products are not a hypothetical. They have caused real recalls and real infections, because microbes growing in a jar you smear near your eyes is not "clean." It is a health risk. You do not want mold in your serum or bacteria in your eye cream, and "it had no scary chemicals in it" is cold comfort when your skin reacts to what grew there instead.

There is an irony here worth sitting with. Natural, botanical products are often more vulnerable, not less, because they are full of the plant sugars, proteins, and extracts that microbes feed on just as eagerly as your skin does. A jar of nutrient-rich botanicals with a weak preservative system is a buffet with the doors open.

The Parabens Panic: What the Science Actually Says

No preservative gets more fear than parabens, so let us handle it carefully, with the precision it deserves.

The panic traces to a 2004 study that found traces of parabens in breast tumor tissue. It got enormous attention, and almost nobody explained the fine print: the study was observational, had no healthy-tissue control group, and did not, could not, show that parabens caused anything. Finding a substance present is not the same as finding it guilty. The authors themselves said as much.

Since then, the actual evidence has been reviewed exhaustively. The FDA's position is plain: it does not have information showing that parabens as used in cosmetics affect human health, and it notes there is no established link to breast cancer. Reviews of their endocrine activity reach the same practical conclusion at the low levels used in cosmetics. And notably, parabens are lower on the allergy scale than many of the "natural" preservatives that replaced them.

Here is the precision that most defenders skip, and it is what makes the case honest. Not all parabens are equal. The short-chain ones, methylparaben and ethylparaben, have the longest safety record and remain permitted worldwide. Out of caution about the theoretical estrogen-like activity of the longer-chain versions, the EU restricted propylparaben and butylparaben to low limits and banned several rarer ones outright in 2014. So the honest statement is not "all parabens, always, no questions." It is "the common ones are well-studied and safe at cosmetic levels, and regulators already trimmed the few that raised questions." That is what real safety oversight looks like, and it should reassure you, not scare you.

Phenoxyethanol and the Baby-Wipe Mix-Up

The preservative we use, phenoxyethanol, gets its own myth: that it is toxic and builds up in your body.

That fear traces to a French health-authority warning, and the context got lost on the way to the internet. The concern was about very high exposure in infants, specifically leave-on products for the diaper area of babies, not properly formulated adult skincare. In adults, phenoxyethanol is metabolized in the liver and excreted efficiently; it does not accumulate. The EU's safety committee has repeatedly reviewed it and affirmed it as safe at up to 1% in cosmetics, and it is cleared in the US and Japan too.

For perspective, the ethanol in a glass of wine is more potent and more toxic in quantity than the phenoxyethanol in your moisturizer, and nobody panics at a dinner party. The name sounds scarier than the molecule behaves. That is the whole pattern with preservatives: the fear tracks how a word sounds, not what it does.

The "Natural Preservatives Are Safer" Trap

Two more traps worth naming, because clean-beauty marketing leans on both.

First, "natural" does not mean "gentle." Benzyl alcohol occurs naturally in fruit and tea, and it can still irritate or sensitize compromised skin. Essential-oil-based preservative systems are natural and are among the more common causes of irritation. Natural origin tells you where an ingredient came from, not how your skin will react to it.

Second, the booster shell game. Ingredients like ethylhexylglycerin and caprylyl glycol are often marketed as "not preservatives," which lets a brand claim "preservative-free" while still relying on them to hold microbes back. But if an ingredient is in the formula to prevent microbial growth, it is doing a preservative's job, whatever the label calls it. Leaning on boosters alone is also risky, because a product can pass its first test and then fail in the real world of daily finger-dips.

How to Judge Preservatives in Skincare

So how do you actually navigate this without a chemistry degree? A few honest questions.

Does the brand tell you what preservative system it uses, and seem comfortable explaining why? Transparency is a good sign. Is the product in a pump or a tube rather than an open jar? Less air and fewer fingers mean less contamination risk, which is a real, practical advantage. And when a brand waves the "preservative-free" flag, ask the obvious question it hopes you will not: then how, exactly, do you keep microbes from growing in a water-based product? A good answer exists for well-made anhydrous or single-use products. A hand-wave is a red flag.

Judge the system, not the scariness of the syllables.

Why Our Skincare Uses Phenoxyethanol

Which brings me to our own honest choice. When you make a water-based product, you really have three options.

Use nothing, which is genuinely dangerous. Use a purely "natural" system, which tends to be less reliable, shorter-lived, and often more irritating. Or use a proven, globally reviewed preservative that quietly does its job.

We chose the third. Phenoxyethanol is stable, broad-spectrum, well tolerated by the vast majority of skin, and backed by decades of regulatory review. We did not pick it because it polls well, it does not, the name scares people. We picked it because it is trustworthy, and because keeping the thing in the jar safe to put on your face is not the place to chase a marketing badge.

Preservatives deserve better PR than they get. They are the unglamorous, invisible reason your skincare stays safe, stable, and doing what you bought it to do. Stay smart, stay skeptical, and aim that skepticism at the slogans, not at the science that is protecting you.

Everyone has an opinion about sunscreen. Spend three minutes on skincare TikTok and you will hear it delivered with total confidence: "Chemical sunscreens are toxic. Use mineral or nothing."

So people show up to the sunscreen aisle already scared of half the shelf, trying to make a health decision when what they actually face is a comfort-and-preference decision.

Let me clear this up properly. The real chemical vs mineral sunscreen question is not "which one is poisoning me." It is "how does each one work, what is each good and bad at, and which will I actually put on my face every single morning." Because that last part is the only one that protects your skin. Here is the honest comparison.

Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen: How Each One Works

Both types have the same job: stopping UV from reaching your skin cells. And here is the first surprise, because the usual explanation of how they differ is mostly wrong.

Chemical, or organic, filters (avobenzone, octocrylene, octinoxate, oxybenzone, and others) absorb UV rays and convert them into a tiny amount of heat, which dissipates. Think of them as sponges that soak up the radiation.

They soak it up too, much like chemical filters do.

So the real difference is not "absorb versus reflect," the way the internet tells it. Both types mainly absorb UV. Both genuinely protect you, and neither is the "safe" one and the "dangerous" one. What actually separates them is the kind of filter, a mineral particle resting on the surface versus a filter dissolved into the formula, and, above all, how each one feels and behaves on your face. That is where the useful comparison lives.

What Chemical Sunscreen Does Well (and Its Catch)

Chemical sunscreen's superpower is that it is nearly invisible.

Because the filters are absorbed into the top layer rather than sitting on top, they tend to be lightweight, blend in clear, and layer beautifully under makeup. No white cast, even on deeper skin tones. For a lot of women, this is the difference between wearing sunscreen every day and "forgetting" because the last one made them look ashy. Some chemical filters, like avobenzone, break down in sunlight unless the formula is built to stabilize them, which is part of why reapplication matters. And one specific filter, oxybenzone, carries more open questions than the rest (more on that below), which is why many modern formulas have quietly moved past it.

So chemical sunscreen tends to win for everyday wear, under makeup, and for anyone who wants protection they cannot see or feel.

What Mineral Sunscreen Does Well (and Its Catch)

The catches are equally real. That surface layer is why mineral sunscreens can leave a white or gray cast, which is more noticeable, and more frustrating, on deeper skin tones. They can feel heavier or chalkier, and because they sit on top, they rub and sweat off more easily, so they need diligent reapplication. Newer formulas have improved the cast a lot, but it is still the number one reason people abandon mineral.

So mineral sunscreen tends to win for sensitive skin, quick application, and reef settings.

"But Isn't Chemical Sunscreen Toxic?" The Honest Answer

Here is the fear that is skewing the whole decision, so let me address it head-on, because it should not be the deciding factor. It is not really a safety choice. The filters in common use are considered safe.

The scare traces to real, widely misread FDA research. In 2019 and 2020, studies showed chemical filters could be detected in the bloodstream after use. But that study was built to maximize absorption, applying sunscreen over most of the body several times a day for days, and it measured only whether the filters showed up in blood. It was not designed to test for toxicity or hormonal effects, so it did not find harm, and it did not find safety either. It found absorption. The authors were explicit about what that means: their findings "do not indicate that individuals should refrain from the use of sunscreen." Detection is not danger, and to date no study has shown these filters harm people at real-world use. Your blood carries traces of your coffee too. A smoke detector going off because you burned the toast does not mean the house is on fire.

The dermatology bodies agree. The AAD states plainly that the science does not show any sunscreen ingredient available in the US to be harmful to human health, and that you should keep wearing it.

Two honest caveats, because pretending there are none is just spin. First, it is reasonable that regulators want more long-term data on filters that were grandfathered in decades ago. Second, oxybenzone is the one filter with real question marks: it is the most absorbed, the one flagged over coral, and the EU tightened its limits on it in 2022. If you want to skip one ingredient to be cautious, that is the reasonable one, and you can, without fearing the whole category.

And the Hawaii ban everyone cites? That was to protect coral reefs, an environmental measure, not a human-health warning. Coral is a fragile organism sitting in the exact water where the filter concentrates. Your skin is a robust organ on a body built to process things. The reef concern is real. It is simply not a statement about you.

So: choose mineral if you like it, choose chemical if you like it. Just make it a preference, not a panic.

So Which Sunscreen Should You Choose?

With safety off the table for both, the decision gets refreshingly practical. Match the sunscreen to your skin and your life.

Reach for mineral if your skin is sensitive, reactive, rosacea-prone, or recovering from a procedure, if you want protection that works the instant you apply it, or if you are swimming over a reef. Zinc-based formulas are the gentle default.

Reach for chemical if you want a lightweight, invisible finish, if you wear it under makeup, if a white cast has driven you crazy before, or if "I cannot feel it, so I will actually wear it" is what keeps you consistent.

And plenty of people keep both: a gentle mineral for calm days or flare-ups, a sleek chemical for under makeup. There is no rule that says you must pick a team for life.

Whichever you choose, the non-negotiables are the same. Broad spectrum, so it covers both UVA (the deeper rays that age skin and pass through glass year-round) and UVB (the surface rays that burn). Both damage DNA and both contribute to skin cancer, so you want protection from the pair, not just one. SPF 30 or higher. And reapplication every couple of hours when you are outdoors.

The Only Sunscreen Rule That Really Matters

Here is how I would put the whole thing to a friend over coffee.

Wearing sunscreen is like wearing a seatbelt. The risk it protects against, UV damage, premature aging, and skin cancer, is real, common, and proven. The risk people are afraid of, some vague "chemical toxicity" never actually shown in humans at real-world use, is the equivalent of the belt maybe wrinkling your shirt. Nobody rides without a seatbelt because it might chafe.

So the mineral versus chemical debate, in the end, matters far less than the internet pretends. Both buckle you in. The best sunscreen is simply the one you will use again and again, the one whose texture you do not resent, that makes it onto your face every morning without a fight. The worst one is the expensive bottle in a drawer, unused, because an app scared you off it.

That daily habit is the single most proven thing you can do to protect your skin's health and its youth, and it quietly guards the collagen you are working to keep from the sun that breaks it down. Do not let a rumor about a word rob you of it.

Cosmetic vs Biological Anti-Aging: Why "Looking Younger" Isn't the Same as Aging Well

A customer asked me recently, "Is your system anti-aging?"

And I paused. Because the honest answer is both yes and no, and it depends entirely on what she meant by the word.

That pause is the whole point of this piece. Because "anti-aging" is doing double duty. It is being used to describe two completely different things, and the beauty industry has spent decades quietly blurring them together. Once you can tell cosmetic vs biological anti-aging apart, you will never read a product label the same way again, and you will stop paying for the wrong one.

Let me pull them apart.

Cosmetic vs Biological Anti-Aging: Two Things, One Word

Here is a distinction the longevity crowd already uses, and it maps perfectly onto skin.

There is your chronological age, the number of birthdays you have had. And there is your biological age, how well your body's systems are actually working. A person can be 58 on paper and functioning like someone younger, or older, depending on the state of the machinery underneath.

Your skin has the same two ages. There is how old it looks. And there is how well it works, its barrier strength, its ability to hold water, how quickly it calms down when irritated.

So "anti-aging" can mean either of two very different goals. Making skin look younger. Or helping skin work better. The industry treats those as the same thing. They are not even close.

Type 1: Cosmetic Anti-Aging (The Tarp)

The first kind is about appearance. It makes skin look younger, usually temporarily, by covering, filling, smoothing, or resurfacing.

I want to be fair here, because this category includes some genuinely effective things, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Botox really does soften the wrinkles it targets. Fillers really do restore volume. Laser resurfacing genuinely improves the skin's surface, and some lasers even prompt real remodeling underneath. And a good moisturizer really does plump the surface and give you a lovely few hours. None of that is fake.

But notice what most of them have in common: they address how your skin looks, and the effect is on a timer. Botox fades in a few months. Filler dissolves. The plumping serum stops working the day you stop using it. Laser is the interesting exception, some devices trigger genuine collagen remodeling that can last years, so it is more than a tarp. But even that is a one-time reset that ongoing aging eventually catches up to, not daily upkeep of how your skin works. For the rest, these are not repairs. They are, to borrow the old image, a tarp thrown over a leaky roof.

A tarp is not useless. On a rainy day it genuinely keeps you dry. But nobody would confuse a tarp with a fixed roof. The leak is still there, patiently waiting, the moment the tarp comes off.

That is cosmetic anti-aging. Real, often effective, and fundamentally temporary, because it was never trying to change how the roof actually works.

Type 2: Biological Anti-Aging (Fixing the Roof)

The second kind is about function. Instead of covering the symptom, it supports the underlying systems, so the skin does its own job better.

What does that look like? Helping skin hold onto its own moisture instead of just adding more on top. Protecting the hyaluronic acid your skin already makes from the enzyme that constantly breaks it down. Rebuilding the lipid barrier so it protects against future damage and calms inflammation. Supporting the conditions under which your skin can keep making collagen, rather than watching it decline by roughly 1% a year unaddressed.

This kind is cumulative. The tarp works instantly and then wears off. Roof repair does the opposite: nothing dramatic on day one, but the structure gets steadily sounder the longer you keep at it.

Now, one honest caveat, because you will not hear it from most brands. This is not "reversing aging." No cream turns your skin's biological clock backward, and anyone promising to make your skin "age in reverse" is selling the same fantasy in a smarter costume. What functional care actually does is help your skin work closer to its potential and slow the decline, so you get the most out of the skin you have, for longer. That is a real, worthwhile, honest goal. It is just not time travel.

Why the Beauty Industry Sells You the Tarp

So if functional care is the better long game, why is almost everything on the shelf a tarp?

Because tarps are a fantastic business.

The model practically runs itself. You get the glow for a few hours. You feel good. It fades. You reapply, and eventually you rebuy. The product that fixes nothing is the product you need again next week, forever. A cream that genuinely made your skin more self-sufficient would, from a sales perspective, be a bug, not a feature.

This is why the industry's answer to every aging concern is "add more." More hyaluronic acid, more collagen in the jar, more moisture on top. What it almost never addresses is why your skin stopped holding those things in the first place. We wrote about that machinery in detail in the Dermal Drain, but the short version is that pouring more in, without slowing what is draining out, is a great way to sell bottles and a poor way to change skin.

Great for business. Not much for biology.

What Functional Anti-Aging Actually Looks Like

So here is the approach we built our system around, and it is unglamorous on purpose.

Rebuild the barrier with the lipids skin is actually made of, ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, so it holds moisture in and keeps irritants out. Add back humectants, like glycerin, that help skin hold water at the surface. And protect the hyaluronic acid your skin already produces by including polyglutamic acid, a powerful humectant that also helps block hyaluronidase, the enzyme that would otherwise degrade your HA within hours. Then, the least sexy ingredient of all: consistency, twice a day, for long enough to let the structure actually rebuild.

That is it. No word on the label engineered to make you feel like you are buying youth. I will be honest about the ceiling, as always: this will not erase deep wrinkles, and it will not make you 30 again. What it does is give your skin the daily support to function better and decline more slowly, which is the honest version of the promise everyone else oversells.

So, Is It Anti-Aging?

Back to my customer's question. Is our system anti-aging?

Yes. But the functional kind, not the mirror-trick kind. It is not trying to fool the reflection for an evening. It is trying to help your skin work the way it is supposed to, day after day, so that the improvements are earned and they last.

You cannot un-age your skin, and you should be deeply suspicious of anyone who says you can. But you can absolutely help it age better, hold its moisture, keep its barrier, calm its inflammation, and hang onto its own resources longer. That is not a cosmetic cover-up. It is a slow, quiet, biological improvement, and unlike the tarp, it does not blow away in the first strong wind.

Supporting the barrier, protecting your hyaluronic acid, and maintaining hydration all improve how skin performs day to day. It is support and slowdown, not a return to your 30-year-old skin.

The functional workhorses are barrier lipids (ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids), natural moisturizing factors like glycerin, and ingredients that protect your existing hyaluronic acid, such as polyglutamic acid, which also helps block the enzyme that degrades HA. Consistency matters more than any single hero ingredient.

Is your system anti-aging? Yes, in the functional sense. It is built to support your skin's barrier, hydration, and resilience over time, not to produce a temporary cosmetic effect that fades by noon. It will not erase wrinkles or reverse your age. It helps your skin work better and age more slowly, which is the kind of anti-aging that actually lasts.
