Slugging: Does Coating Your Face in Vaseline Actually Work?
You've seen the shiny faces online. The before-and-after photos. The enthusiastic testimony: "I coated my face in Vaseline every night for a month and my skin has never been better."
Slugging, the practice of applying a thick layer of petroleum jelly as the final step of your nighttime routine, has been one of the most persistent skincare trends of the last few years. The name comes from the slug-like sheen it leaves on your face. The promise: seal in your entire skincare routine, prevent overnight moisture loss, wake up glowing.
The science behind it is real. Petroleum jelly reduces transepidermal water loss by up to 99%. That's not a marketing number. That's peer-reviewed data from the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Dermatologists have used occlusive therapy for decades to support severely dry and compromised skin.
So slugging works. The question is: does it solve the right problem? And for skin after 50, is it the right tool, or is it a workaround for a moisturizer that isn't doing enough?
What Slugging Actually Does (It's Simpler Than You Think)
Petroleum jelly is an occlusive. It sits on the surface of your skin and creates an impermeable seal. Nothing gets out.
It doesn't hydrate. It doesn't deliver ceramides. It doesn't provide humectants. It doesn't repair your barrier's lipid matrix. As a recent Dermatology Times review stated plainly: petrolatum "does not contribute to the skin's natural lipid matrix or add moisture."
What it does is prevent the moisture already in your skin from evaporating overnight. Whatever hydration exists underneath the seal stays there. Your skin marinates in its own moisture while you sleep.
That's the entire mechanism. One function, performed extremely well. The debates about slugging aren't about whether it works (it does). They're about whether that one function is what your skin actually needs.
The Lid and the Pot (Again)

Occlusion seals the surface. That's the lid. But if the barrier underneath is structurally compromised, if ceramide production has dropped, the lipid matrix has gaps, and hyaluronic acid is being degraded faster than it's produced, then you're sealing a broken system shut. The water loss slows for the night. But the barrier wakes up just as broken as it was before you went to bed.
The pot is empty. The lid doesn't fill it.
This is the fundamental issue with slugging as a long-term strategy: it addresses the symptom (transepidermal water loss) without touching the cause (structural barrier deficit). For one night, your skin feels more hydrated because less moisture escaped. By the next evening, the same moisture loss has resumed because the barrier underneath hasn't changed.
Slugging is a nightly bandaid on a problem that needs a repair crew.
Five Reasons to Think Twice After 50
The 25-year-olds who popularized slugging on Reddit and TikTok have skin that's different from yours in every relevant dimension. Their barriers are intact. Their cell turnover is fast. Their oil production is high. Their skin can handle an impermeable overnight seal without most of the consequences below.
After 50, the calculation changes.
Milia risk is higher.
We wrote an entire blog about milia and how heavy occlusives contribute to their formation. The mechanism is specific: when an impermeable layer seals the skin surface, it blocks the enzymatic activity that helps dead cells detach. Keratin gets trapped beneath the seal and hardens into those tiny, pearly cysts that won't go away.
After 50, cell turnover has slowed from roughly 28 days to 40 to 60 days. Dead cells are already lingering longer than they should. Adding an impermeable petroleum layer on top of already-slow turnover is exactly the combination that produces milia, especially around the eyes where the skin is thinnest and turnover is slowest.
It can trap irritants in.
If any product in the routine underneath is mildly irritating, a retinol that's slightly too strong, a vitamin C that's borderline for your barrier, the occlusive layer forces prolonged contact. The irritant can't evaporate off the surface. It can't be absorbed by the pillowcase. It sits against your skin all night, sealed in by the petroleum.
Dermatologists specifically advise skipping slugging on retinoid or acid nights for this reason. The occlusive layer doesn't know what it's sealing in. Good ingredients stay. Irritating ones stay too.
Breakout potential in sealed, warm conditions.
Petroleum jelly itself is non-comedogenic (we covered this in the mineral oil blog). But the environment it creates, sealed, warm, moist, zero ventilation, can promote bacterial proliferation underneath. Sweat, sebum, and bacteria that would normally reach the surface and be managed by the skin's acid mantle are trapped under the seal.
For oily or combination skin, this environment can produce congestion and breakouts. The petroleum didn't clog the pores. The sealed terrarium it created gave bacteria better conditions to grow.
Pillow transfer and hygiene.
Petroleum jelly transfers to pillowcases immediately and aggressively. It stains fabric. It doesn't wash out easily in a standard laundry cycle. And the greasy residue on the pillowcase accumulates bacteria between washes, creating exactly the kind of surface hygiene problem we discussed in the fabrics blog.
The woman who just spent time cleansing, moisturizing, and sealing her face is now pressing it into a petroleum-coated, bacteria-friendly pillowcase. The slug is undermining the surface it sleeps on.
The fundamental mismatch.
After 50, the primary skin concern isn't moisture evaporation in isolation. It's the Dermal Drain: ceramide depletion, HA degradation, collagen decline, slowed turnover, barrier compromise. These are structural deficits. Sealing the surface doesn't address any of them. It's like putting a tarp over a house with a crumbling foundation. The rain stays out for the night. The foundation is still crumbling.
When Slugging Actually Makes Sense
I've just listed five concerns. Now let me be fair, because slugging isn't always the wrong choice.
Post-procedure recovery. After a chemical peel, laser treatment, or microneedling, the barrier is acutely compromised and TEWL is extreme. Dermatologists routinely recommend petroleum jelly as a wound-care occlusive in this context. Short-term, therapeutic, supervised. The barrier is being actively rebuilt by the healing process. The petroleum protects it while it heals.
Severe acute dryness. Accutane-level dryness. Severe eczema flares. Skin so compromised that emergency moisture retention is the immediate priority. In these cases, slugging provides relief while the barrier stabilizes. This is medical-level dryness, not "my moisturizer doesn't feel like enough."
Targeted areas, not full-face. Cracked lips. Severely dry cuticles. Rough, painful patches on hands or elbows. A thick occlusive on a specific, contained area overnight serves a clear purpose without the full-face risks.
On top of a genuinely well-formulated routine. If your moisturizer already delivers ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids, humectants, and hyaluronidase inhibition, adding a thin occlusive layer on top can enhance overnight retention of those ingredients. The petroleum protects what the moisturizer already delivered. This is the one scenario where slugging complements repair rather than substituting for it.
Why a Well-Formulated Moisturizer Makes Slugging Unnecessary
This isn't an attack on slugging. It's an observation about why the trend exists.
Slugging became popular because most moisturizers are doing one job when they should be doing two.
Lightweight moisturizers deliver humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid) without adequate occlusion. They pull water in, but the water evaporates overnight because nothing seals it. By morning, the skin is dry again. The moisturizer hydrated. It didn't retain.
Heavy occlusives (petroleum, mineral oil, thick dimethicone creams) seal the surface without delivering barrier-repairing lipids or humectants. They retain whatever's there, but they don't add anything. The skin stays sealed. It doesn't get repaired.
Slugging is the consumer's workaround for this gap: apply the lightweight humectant product, then seal it in with petroleum. Two products compensating for what neither does alone.
A well-formulated moisturizer does both in one step. Ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids rebuild the barrier structure. Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and polyglutamic acid pull water in and protect it from enzymatic degradation. The formula itself provides enough occlusion (through its lipid matrix, not through petroleum) to retain the hydration it delivered.
The pot is full. The lid is built in. The slug is unnecessary.
Slugging Isn't Dangerous. It's a Workaround.
Petroleum jelly is safe. It's well-studied. It's been recommended by dermatologists for over a century. There is nothing wrong with using it when the situation calls for it.
But as a nightly routine for skin after 50, slugging solves the wrong problem. It seals a barrier that needs rebuilding. It traps irritants that need to escape. It creates milia risk on slow-turnover skin. And it exists because the moisturizer underneath wasn't doing enough on its own.
Fix the moisturizer. Give your barrier the ceramides, humectants, and enzymatic protection it actually needs. Let the repair happen at the structural level, not the surface level.
And if you still want to slug after a harsh winter night or a particularly dry flight, go ahead. Just know the difference between a tool you use occasionally and a workaround you've mistaken for a routine.
